A CIO implements the technology strategy that runs a business. That business may not necessarily have a business model based on a technology product. Infrastructure, Security, and reliability of technology resources to keep a business operational are the key aspects of the function of a CIO.

A CTO is in charge of the vision for technology products and their development. They plan the roadmap for the life of the product and guide the business towards its successful launch. They build the team responsible for delivery and engineering the technology the product is built on.

It may be necessary to have both a CTO and CIO as a technology product-focused organization grows.

Which does your business need, a CIO or a CTO?
