Why do you want a website?

So you are ready to pull the trigger on launching a new website for your business, organization or event. This is an exciting time. You are buzzing with anticipation. You can’t wait to get started.

One Question

I’ve just got one question for you? Why are you starting this website?

I’m not trying to tell you you don’t need one. I’m probably one of the biggest advocates for having a website. It’s one of the best platforms to communicate your message and marketing to a global audience, but…

Take a moment and ask yourself why you want this website and what you want it to do for you.

Is it a placeholder for a larger message down the road? Is it intended to take orders or provide customer service? Is it a platform to allow you to post regular updates and information to your audience?

If you figure out this answer up front you are focusing your intent and setting yourself up for success with your website in the future. Too often I’ve seen clients jump into website construction without a strategy or even a sense of direction for their websites. This leads to a website that can be vague, unfocused and leave visitors confused about what they should do next.

In those situations they opt to leave, or bounce away from your website.

If you take a few minutes now to come up with a reason that you want your website to exist that reason will become your guiding strategy. Write it down. Post it where you can see it every time you begin an update to your website. You will stay focused and your website will be better for it.
